Inheriting gift Savings Bonds

My brother just discovered a Series EE Savings Bond made out to his wife as a gift. His wife is now deceased and he would like to know how he would go about cashing it in. Tom's response The exact steps to cashing it depend on whether:
  • the bond is registered in his wife's name only or if it also has a co-owner or beneficiary
  • the estate is open or closed
  • the bond is worth more or less than$1,000.
All the cases are covered in this discussion about inheriting Savings Bonds.
